A Certificate of Analysis is the single most useful document a research-peptide vendor can publish, and it is also the easiest document to fake, misrepresent, or quietly disconnect from the vial it's supposed to describe. Most buyers glance at a PDF, see a purity percentage north of 98%, and move on. That's not reading a COA — that's skimming a marketing asset. This post walks through what the document is actually built from, section by section, and how to check whether the lab behind it is real.
The three things a real COA has to show
A complete COA answers three separate questions, and a vendor that only answers one of them is giving you a partial picture: is this the molecule it's labeled as (identity), how pure is it (purity), and is it free of harmful contamination (endotoxin/sterility).
- HPLC purity — High-performance liquid chromatography separates a sample into its components and measures the relative area of each peak. The main peak's percentage of total peak area is the purity figure vendors quote, typically in the high 90s for well-run batches.
- Mass spectrometry identity — HPLC alone can't confirm what the main peak is, only that it's mostly one thing. Mass spec measures the molecular weight of that peak and compares it against the expected value for the labeled peptide, which is what actually confirms identity rather than just purity.
- Endotoxin testing (LAL assay) — Bacterial endotoxin is a separate risk category from purity and identity, tested via a Limulus Amebocyte Lysate assay and reported in EU/mL. A COA that only shows HPLC and skips mass spec and endotoxin data is showing you the easiest third of the picture.
What 'third-party' actually needs to mean
Every vendor in this category claims third-party testing. Very few make it easy to confirm. The distinction that matters is whether the lab is named, independently operating, and reachable outside the vendor's own website — versus an unnamed 'accredited lab' referenced only in vendor copy.
Two labs the research-peptide community treats as reference-standard cross-checks are Janoshik Analytical and Finnrick Analytics, precisely because both operate independently of any single vendor and both let a buyer look up a report without going through the seller. Vendors that use other labs aren't automatically suspect — Protide Health, for example, discloses Freedom Diagnostics Testing by name with a searchable accession code per batch, which is a meaningfully different level of verifiability than a vendor that simply links a PDF with no lab name attached at all.
A COA with no named, independently reachable lab is not a third-party document. It's a vendor-authored document with a lab-looking template.
How to verify a Janoshik report
Janoshik publishes results on its own site, separate from any vendor's marketing pages. When a COA cites Janoshik, look for a report or sample ID printed on the document, then check it against Janoshik's public results listing rather than trusting the PDF at face value. A batch number that doesn't resolve to anything on the lab's own site is a red flag regardless of how professional the document looks.
The same logic applies to any lab a vendor names: if the lab has a public portal or lookup tool, use it. If a vendor names a lab that has no public-facing verification method at all, treat the claim as unverified rather than assuming the omission is incidental.
Batch traceability — the step most buyers skip
A COA is only meaningful if it's tied to the specific lot on the vial in front of you, not to 'a batch' of that product generically. This is where several vendors in our research fell short even when their underlying lab work was legitimate. Core Peptides, for example, links COAs from product pages without an account wall, but our review found batch numbers on those documents frequently don't map cleanly to the lot number printed on the actual vial — undermining the traceability the document exists to provide, even though a separate blinded third-party test confirmed the shipped compound was correctly identified at the molecular level.
Before trusting a COA, match its batch or lot number character-for-character against the vial or shipping label. If they don't match, or if the vendor can't produce the specific batch document on request, the COA on the product page is not evidence about the product you received.
A quick reading checklist
- Is the testing lab named, and does it operate independently of the vendor?
- Does the lab have a public portal or lookup method you can use without the vendor's help?
- Does the document include HPLC purity, mass-spec identity, and endotoxin/sterility data — or only one or two of the three?
- Does the batch/lot number on the document match the number on the vial or shipping label?
- Is the document dated recently relative to when the product shipped, or is it a generic spec reused across an entire product line?
None of this is legal or medical guidance, and it isn't an endorsement of purchasing or using any research compound. It's a framework for reading a document that a lot of buyers currently take on faith.
